Personal Space Invaded
2014
Acrylic on canvas
101.5 x 76 cm
There is something so powerful about a moment of eye contact with a stranger. Although eye contact does not involve a physical intrusion, a stranger's eye contact can create brief but strong feelings of discomfort and vulnerability.
In this work, I thought about using glass as an analogy for depicting this brief encounter. Normal glass is transparent, making it almost invisible. However, the materiality of glass is immediately apparent when shattered.
As eye contact is made, a stranger is at once confronted with this social/personal boundary and is kept out.
