Magic of the drop
2018
Designed with Valerie Koh and Jonjoe Fong
Scent testing or sampling should be a personal experience between the user and scent. However, the visual clutter in most perfume displays often distracts users from a pure appreciation of individual scents. By exploring the emotive and symbolic value of a single drop, we designed a perfume display to highlight the distinct character and preciousness of each scent. In doing so, we sought to restore intimacy in the process of encountering new scents.
User Journey
A drop of perfume is illuminated as it sits at the end of a glass tube. A motion sensor controls the dispensing of perfume, releasing the drop onto the leaf-shape tester provided.

Hydrophobic coating on selected areas of the tester causes the perfume to form a bead as it lands. As the shape of the tester is depressed towards a point, the drop naturally rolls towards the middle and spreads pigmented inks as it is absorbed into the paper.

Each tester is specially formulated to reveal patterns that are unique for different scents and brands. Patterns can also be designed to reflect the scent graph of the selected perfume (bottom image).

When a perfume is purchased, a matching ceramic diffuser inscribed with its unique pattern will be provided. This creates a common language between the in-store testing and take home experience. These ceramic diffusers are not only functional but also serve as collectible pieces that remind users of each fragrance's distinct identity.
