Grooming

Photo documentation in Netherlands
Grooming is a visual diary that documents my observations of how we groom ourselves as well as our pets. It is made to mimic an inverted flip storybook that shows 2 different situations when the book is opened from either end. I wanted to draw attention to the increasing humanization of pet grooming services (when both situations are compared), allowing people to question how this phenomena came to be and its broader ethical implications.
This book was created as part of a project where I began to look into a more extreme form of pet grooming - dog breeding. It made me question if we were grooming our pets for their hygiene comfort or for our own pleasure (aesthetic preferences). For example, the term "pet" actually represents a psychological shift in perspective in the past when animals were kept for company and pleasure rather than functionality. Eventually, I designed a set of cards to help prospective pet owners make more mindful decisions when purchasing a pet. You may view that
